| Akha Hill Tribe Headdresses and Bamboo Love Shacks Akha hill tribe women in northern Laos dress in faded shades of black cloth. Color exists only in their decorative accouterments. Old coins add a bit of glinting highlight to their costumes. The Akha are a proud people. It's thought they may have originated in Mongolia about 1500 years ago. Today most Akha hill tribes live in southern China or in northern Thailand or in two provinces of nearby northern Laos. Today their culture is on decline . . . | |
| Bizarre Hanoi Impressions: Vodka-Embalmed Serpents, A Mythical Giant Tortoise The giant, mythical tortoise rallied himself from deep slumber at a depth far below the surface of the mysterious, murky waters of Lake Hoan Kiem positioned smack in the center of bustling Hanoi. The old turtle chuckled to himself . . . some locals didn't think he existed. But many of his adherents ascribed to him god-like powers. Truth be it, he reveled in this euphoria. A sub-surface crab had just clinched its pinchers into his leg. Ouch! So this magnificent tortoise knew what was real . . . | |
| Pushkar Chaos: Camels, Sadhus, Snake Charmers, Lepers and Little Blue Boys Dressed as Lord Shiva I entered the bizarre world of of the Pushkar Fair: Camels, sadhu holy men, pilgrims, touts, tourists, snake charmers, lepers and little blue boys dressed as the Hindu god Lord Shiva. They were all there. The full moon of November brings a bit of insanity to the local atmosphere--fireworks, glitter, Rajasthani fashionistas--all side-by-side with the filth. But that's India . . . | |
| Myanmar Magical Impressions: Glittering Temples and Lotus Flowers Rising From Murky Waters I persevered in my quest to conquer the slopes of Mount Kyaiktiyo in southern Myanmar. It wasn't a mountain to be approached lightly. The devotion-charged Golden Rock at its pinnacle was the reward. All Burmese pay homage to this wish-drenched balancing boulder--a miraculous pilgrimage site they must visit before they die. Legend has it that a dragon serpent princess found this rock at the bottom of the sea and with her supernatural powers she transported it to heaven. Many believe . . . | |
| Rajasthani Splendor: An Ethereal Maharaja Floating Palace, an Amazing Blue City, a Nostalgic Desert Fort Town The ethereal white palace seemed to float on the water's surface. Shimmering twilight reflections gracefully danced across my mind and across the idyllic Lake Pichola. When you sit at the lake's edge and the approaching night sky slips into hues of mauve and deep blue, it's easy to let yourself be transported to another time--one of painted elephants and maharajas and royal floating palaces and extravagance you might only have dreamed about. This is only one of Rajasthan's magical cities . . . | |
| Kathmandu Magic: Land of Enchanted Tibetan Stupas, Land of a Revered Living Child Goddess Kathmandu . . . the name itself seems to connote an enchanted land where ethereal Buddhist stupas are draped in prayer flags reaching for heaven. The purity of line in the design of nearby Bodhnath Stupa is not replicated with such grace anywhere else in Nepal. Watchful eyes of the Buddha are painted on four sides of the gilded tower looming above. It's one of the few places in the world where unfettered Tibetan Buddhist culture still exists. Thousands of devotees circumnavigate the stupa . . . | |
| Travel Cambodia – Phnom Penh, Angkor Wat, Sihanoukville Cambodia is a land on the mend. From 1977 through 1980, the Khmer Rouge ruled the country, fanatics bent on genocide. Millions were killed and the period was put to film in the movie, “The Killing Fields.” Fortunately, those days are over and the country is becoming a tourist destination | |

| A Grand Ole Adventure My sister's a real trooper. Her husband is off serving in Iraq, and she's on her own looking after three kids under the age of five. She's virtually alone in Atlanta - Burt's family is in Fort Lauderdale, and we're recently out here in the Nashville area. But Beth is just one of those special folks who never complains. She somehow manages to see the good in any situation, and is always ready to help those she sees as less fortunate than herself. | |
| Responsible Travel - Policy into Practice Everyone is talking about Responsible Travel; the old "Leave Nothing But Your Footprints" has been a popular slogan for many Travel Agents and Tour Operators for years. But is there a gap between Policy and Practice? If Responsible Tourism is really being practiced than why do Big Cats in some of Africans most popular game parks have to adapt habits, like hunting, to the most treacherous part of the day - midday. | |
| We Left Our Hearts In San Francisco Michael and I are both huge music fans, but I'm a little bit country and he's a little bit rock and roll. We were enjoying Sunday brunch in Santa Monica with some friends, when conversation turned to the upcoming weekend we were planning in celebration of our one-year wedding anniversary. | |
