A Courchevel Diet

Ski, Eat, Drink: basis of a ski holiday right? Well, definitely the basis of a seasonnaires five months of unreality in the mountains.

I was lucky enough to do my first ski season in the vibrant resort of Courchevel, in a less than vibrant, run down, now defunct, hotel in the centre of 1850.

Our staff meals (including breakfast) consisted of the guests leftovers from the night before. Occasionally, if we were lucky, we would actually get some kind of meat product with yesterday's braised red cabbage and dauphinoise.

On our 'Catina Diet' as we would call it, most of our £60 a week wages were thus split between toffee vodka at Le Jump Bar and the incredible pizzas at Le Kalico.

Le Kalico was conveniently positioned between our hotel and our staff accommodation, right on the piste in Courchevel 1850, no way could we have avoided it on our walk back home. Pizza then a ski? Always.

Usually this would be after a morning of serving hotel guests full English breakfasts, then cleaning up their rooms which had somehow been destroyed again in the past 24hours, all on a ridiculous hangover from a night out in... where else? Kalico.

We would roll up, grab a seat on a table that we were definitely dancing on a few hours ago; listen to the, slightly inappropriate, hip hop mix quite obviously on repeat from the night before and order the 'seasonnaires special' (€10 for a mammoth stone-baked pizza, drink and a free espresso... of course) off the bouncer/waiter/barman/all-round employee.

The place would be packed out with either holidaymakers, enjoying a quick lunch on the sun bleached terrace before heading out on the rest of their full day of skiing; or seasonnaires, doing exactly as we were - enjoying a quick gossip, after a morning of procrastination, before grabbing a couple of hours of well earnt ski time.

Our nights off were spent scrounging at the Chalet Hosts kitchen window for what we considered luxury cuisine, just to avoid the inevitability of the broccoli floret staff dinner waiting for us at the hotel.

While the chalet hosts were complaining about those few pounds they seem to have put on (said whilst polishing off the afternoon tea cake) we spent our hours waiting for the next tips day, because if we didn't get a Kalicos pizza, we were eating veloute of pea for the next week.
