More foreign visitors are expected to travel to Cuba during the 2011/2012's winter tourism season since new tour operators and airlines establish operations in the country. According to the National Information Agency (AIN), the number of tourists taking Cuba holidays in this period will surpass 2010/2011's figures by 10 per cent. Canada and the United Kingdom will remain as the top senders of tourists to Cuba holiday destinations while Argentina and Russia will improve last years' performance at a record pace. Italy, Germany, France and Mexico will grow in visitors' numbers whilst Spain, seriously affected by the global economic crisis will send fewer travellers to the largest island in the Caribbean. During this period of time, the Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) will keep implementing actions to add hotel rooms and improve out-of-hotels facilities across the country in order to increase value for money of packaged and individual Cuba holidays. As a result, new hotels will be opening in Holguin, Cayo Coco and Cayo Santa Maria. Nevertheless, Cuba's major event in the current holiday season happens to be the visit of the Pope, Benedict XVI, scheduled to take place from 26th to 28th March. The eminence will be saying two masses in Cuban territory, one in Santiago and the other in Havana which are already preparing to receive the thousands of parishioners that will be around at the time. By the end of 2012, the island is expected to receive 2.9 million visitors although unofficial sources speak of surpassing the three million tourists. Either way, MINTUR's commitment is to keep investing to increase the number of hotels, golf courses, marinas and other small-scale attractions to encourage a boost in bookings for Cuba holidays. So far, tourism in Cuba has developed in a complex international context, having the U.S. financial embargo as the most serious problem to face. This policy prohibits not only regular economic and financial exchange between the two countries but restricts Cuba travel to approved segments of American citizens. This sets a noticeable difference with other destinations in the Caribbean like the Dominican Republic which receives more than a million of U.S. travellers every year. During 2011, the arrival of U.S. tourists to Cuba grew for sure, but the exact figure is not officially available for Media yet. |
