Buying and Selling Frequent Flyer Miles

A main objective for every traveler is to obtain airline tickets at the most affordable prices. This can be done by searching online through numerous airlines and search engines, or by way of airline miles and membership rewards points. The ins and outs of these programs can be complicated, with numerous clauses and loopholes meant to protect the airlines’ best interests. Some even opt to sell frequent flyer miles rather than trying to redeem them at their convenience. Selling Frequent Flyer Miles Some people are under the misconception that it is illegal to sell your frequent flyer miles. This is patently false. The exception is the state of Utah. Airlines don’t like the practice, and will do anything in their power to prevent the sale of miles, but the law will not get involved. Many travelers find themselves stuck with a large amount of airline miles that they can’t use due to blackout dates and other technicalities. The few websites that deal with buying and selling air miles act as a middleman between buyer and seller. They buy airline miles for cash, and often sell them to business travelers or other frequent flyers in need of more miles. When done correctly, airlines view the transaction as a simple transfer of miles. Buying Airline Miles Airlines sell miles directly to customers through their rewards program pages. They usually charge a few cents per mile, with slight differences. For example, American Airlines miles will go for 2.5 to 2.75 while Delta charges closer to 3.5 cents per mile. Because they are pricey, these miles should only be bought by customers who already have most of the miles needed to purchase a ticket, and are looking to purchase the remainder required for the ticket. Another way to obtain airline miles is by using a credit card that rewards cardholders with frequent flyer miles. Some will even reward members with double points for purchases of a specific type, such as dining or entertainment. Opening a card of this variety can be a good way to earn the last few miles needed to reach a specific goal, and boost one’s credit score by paying on time. A third way to multiply your frequent flyer miles is by receiving it as a gift from friends or family. Any membership rewards member can simply transfer some or all of their miles to a family member or friend. Keep in mind, though, that there are often processing fees. Using Miles for Without Flying Because airlines know that travelers get frustrated with the restrictions on their airline miles, many rewards programs offer other ways to redeem frequent flyer miles. The miles can go toward hotels, car rentals, performances, and other travel related expenses. However, the ratio will not be one to one; customers will lose out on the value of their miles when applying them to other purchases. Travelers who can’t use their miles for tickets have to choose between using them in other ways or selling frequent flyer miles for cash.
