Linz is the capital of the state of Upper Austria and the third largest Austrian city. This region attracts those who don't like wide roads, blocked up with travel buses from all around Europe. You will like Baroque abbeys, beautiful valleys, snow-covered mountains, green meadows and impassable woods. The main attraction of the region is the Pöstlingberg mountain with a monastery on its top. Built in the 18th century, this church is a sacred spot, from which one can observe magnificent views over Linz. And inside the mountain there is another captivating world - a grotto railway, leading through the gnome tunnel and into the land of fairytales. Above there is another railroad climbing a steep slope. You will enjoy this trip along the territory that borders Linz Zoo. Just like in many other ancient cities, the heart of the Upper Austrian capital is the Old Town. At daytime, it rhythm is hasty and business-like, and in the evening its relaxed or excited, depending on where you prefer to spend your time. Another attraction of Linz is the marble Pestsäule, the "plague column", also known as the Holy Trinity. Having observed the column, we advise you to stroll along the city shops on the territory west of the Old Toen. You will definitely find lots of attractions on your way. One landmark that rises above the Old Town is the Linz Castle, but there is also another attraction that will draw your attention - Saint Martins church which is almost 1200 years old. When you get back to the Old town, the Main Square - Hauptplatz, will meet you with its Baroque buildings and lead you to the Blumauerplatz and the above-mentioned Holy Trinity column. Numerous churches of Linz witnessed great amount of historic events. Acquaintance with its rich history and a visit to the city museums and galleries might become a true event. For instance, Castle Museum Linz presents unusual exhibitions and collections whereas such museums as Nordico - Museum of the City of Linz and Museum Francisco-Carolinum will lead you through all the periods of the history of Linz. River Danube is a mighty but peaceful background for the city business life. However, if you want to have rest you can enjoy a river cruise along the Danube. Ars Electronica center (the center for electronic arts) is located on its northern bank whereas the opposite bank is occupied with Castle Hill and the Danube Park with its curious sculptures. If you are fond of nature, you will be enchanted with Linz Botanical Gardens and its collections of cactuses and orchids. You will also enjoy wonderful landscapes that surround the city: Alpine meadows, crystal-clean lakes... As for entertainment, one will find everything he needs: from four-star temples for gourmands to small cafes and stalls selling sausages. Having fortified yourself, you can get acquainted with a varied cultural programme: numerous galleries, five museums, summer concerts under the blue sky, cosy theatre stage and romantic Arkadenhof. There are international congresses and conferences organised at local Design centre. Thousands of musicians come to Linz to take part in Klangwolke - "the sound cloud", usually held at the Danube park. There are also pop concerts organised at local stadium every summer.
