One of the few truly multicultural cities in the world, London is one location that requires at least one visit in a lifetime. It is the largest city in the United Kingdom and the European Union, home to around eight million people of all nationalities and cultures, and one of the few cities which will most likely have something for just about any visiting tourists. - London has the largest GDP in Europe and is, alongside New York, the most important financial center in the world. - It is estimated that the citizens of London speak around 300 languages. - The city is the home of four World Heritage sites: the Tower of London, Kew Gardens, Greenwich and the site that contains Westminster Abbey, the Palace of Westminster and St. Margaret's Church. - The London subway is the oldest underground network in the world. - London will be the home of the 2012 Olympic Games. While it is proven that there were inhabitants in the area since prehistoric times, the first important settlement was in the Roman times, in 43 AD. In Anglo-Saxon times London had evolved into the Lundenwic settlement. During Alfred the Great's reign, the city's name was changed to Ealdwic (“old city”). The city quickly started gaining in importance after the 11th century, when Edward the Confessor re-built the Westminster area, turning it into England's administrative center. As England developed in terms of trade and mercantilism and the British Empire grew, London became a city of great commercial and political importance. In the 20th century, it also became a center for youth culture and it is now recognized as one of the most important cultural centers in the world. Things to See and Do The city presents sufficient sightseeing locations for any tourist type. As a result of the British Empire development, London's museums contain some of the most important exhibits available, from Greek statues sculpted before the birth of Christ, to the latest scientific developments. The most important museums in London like the British Museum, the National Gallery and the Science Museum also have the advantage of having no mandatory visitation fee (even though there is a donation request at entry). Other important spots include: - The Tower of London – former residence for kings of England, a tragic prison and the place where the Crown Jewels are kept. - Madame Tussaud's – the original wax museum, containing figures of the most important people in history and in the present. - Buckingham Palace – current residence of the British Monarch. - Trafalgar Square – famous meeting place, also presenting Nelson's column and facing the National Gallery. - the Palace of Westminster – home to the British Parliament and the famous Big Ben. - Westminster Abbey – resting place for some of the most famous English and British monarchs. - Regent's park – in the Northern area, next to the London Zoo. Nightlife Famous for its clubbing scene, London has what it takes to please even the most fervent party goer. As home to some of the most famous bands in the world, London will also provide sufficient entertainment in terms of live concerts. For theater lovers, the West End will provide the ideal evening. For shopping enthusiasts, Oxford Street, Bond Street and Regent Street will be more than likely prove to be heaven. Eating and Drinking Whether you are one for traditional English food that can be found at reasonable prices in most English pubs or you would rather go for fast-food choices like pizza, one can find affordable food in London, if one looks hard enough. However, if you would like to try a finer restaurant, be prepared to spend more money than you usually would in a European capital. As a multicultural city, London will provide all types of food from the classy Italian and French, the spicy Asian cuisine (in Chinatown and not only) to the incredibly pricey steak houses in the Leicester area. You may want to consult with a person living in London or a guide before choosing a place to eat – there are some great affordable places in the more inconspicuous areas.
