We are all guilty of losing or misplacing our keys, our wallet, or some other critical personal item at some point in our lives. Many people know what number to call to cancel their credit cards, or how to obtain a new driver’s license, but what do you do when you lose a passport? Whether it is stolen or you misplaced it last time you moved, it’s important to know how to go about obtaining a new one, which will in turn, render the passport that is no longer in your possession invalid. Don't know where to start? This article will get you started on the right track. You must first, report the loss of your passport. This is a critical step and it should be done as soon as you realize it is no longer in your possession. To report this, you will need to complete a DS-64 form. This form will provide a detailed statement regarding the loss of your passport. You may also call the Passport Services office of the US Department of State. If you ever lose your passport while you are travel abroad you will need to visit the nearest US Consulate or Embassy immediately. It is essential to complete every field in the DS-64. You should try to provide as much detail as possible regarding the circumstances under which you lost your passport, or how you believe it was stolen. Once you have filled in all the necessary information, you will send this form along with the other necessary forms in order to have your passport replaced. To seek a replacement, you will have to take your DS-64 along with a DS-11 form to a registered passport acceptance facility or passport agency. The DS-11 is what you'll fill in to apply for a replacement passport or a new passport. Your passport is invalidated once it's been reported stolen. Because of this, you will no longer be able to use that passport in case you are able to recover it, thus it is best to obtain a new passport immediately. You cannot request an already invalidated passport to be revalidated. What if you recover your passport after you've reported it was stolen? You will be required to send this to the US Department of State's Passport Services office. You can request this passport returned to you, otherwise, it will be destroyed by the office. Application for a replacement for lost or stolen passports require you to appear personally at the acceptance facility. Be sure that you check whether you have filled in all the forms, as well as supplied all the necessary documents to get a replacement passport- doing this will help you save time and a lot of headache once you get to the acceptance facility. You will need your DS-64, DS-11, several approved documents as proof of identification, 2 photos, and a check or money order for the replacement fee made out to the US Department of State. Now that you know how to replace a lost or stolen passport, let's review. First, report the loss of your passport immediately. You can fill in the DS-64 form, call the passport services office, or the nearest Consulate or Embassy depending on your situation. After you've reported the loss, you may then request a replacement passport |
