Sir Hans Sloane gifted the nation his entire collection of specimens upon his death and that laid the foundation for this museum more than two centuries ago. However the museum per se became functional only much later, in the year 1881. The architecture of the different wings of the museum is admired for its stately appearance, spacious hallways and galleries and depiction of the beauties of British nature in every possible inch. The painted ceilings, stained glass, terracotta ornaments and artistic arches are all thanks to the visionary architect behind the project during its early years; Alfred Waterhouse. The most visited arcade of the museum is the Darwin Centre. It's a high tech science stage which educates the public on various aspects of life, science and nature. Many renowned scientists work in the sophisticated laboratories and even you can be involved in their research and discoveries. The many colourful zones have a story of their own to relate and a lesson to teach. The Red Zone, which includes the geological museum, explains how our planet keeps changing and measures we can take to preserve it. The Blue Zone brings to you the blue whale and facts about the dinosaur while the Green Zone familiarizes you with the Earth's ecology. Visiting the Orange Zone is like a trot across the daffodils and tulips as it presents all the exotic fauna and flora. Students and naturalists the world over are eager to visit the Natural History Museum as it offers a plethora of learning opportunities and novel experiences. Some of the best accommodation in London is located quite near the museum so you will probably be only a short walk away in the morning. The Langham London has a reputation for being a much sought after luxury London hotel that you could make your home while you meander through this wondrous world of science. |
