Benares or Varanasi in Hindi is the holiest city of India’s majority followers of Hindu religion one of the most important pilgrimage centers in India. It is situated on the west bank of holy Ganges. Also known as Banaras it is a major tourist attraction for those traveling to India. Benares was ravaged by Muslim invaders from 11th century onwards who destroyed temples and looted their wealth. They desecrated many temples and built mosques over them Alamgir Mosque is one such instance of vandalism built by Aurangzeb over a Lord Vishnu temple. Even till this date Varanasi is a major learning centre for Sanskrit scholars. Tulsidas the famous Indian poet belonged to this city. Hindus believe that meeting one’s end at Varanasi will result in attaining salvation. It is believed that a dip in the holy river cleanses one of all the sins committed in life and in the previous lives as well. The strings of bathing Ghats on the west bank of river Ganges are the principal attraction of the holy city. � Benares is famous for its temple some of which have been built by wealthy princess and industrialists like the Birla’s. It is also well known for its Ghats which number well over a hundred. Benares is a major tourist center and is visited by many foreign tourists who come here in search for spiritual quest and understanding Hinduism. It is today a place of tourist interest in India. Benares is also popular for its silk brocades and Benares saris as well as “sitar” which is a musical instrument used in Indian classical music. There are many travel agencies conducting tours here. Many travel agents in India offer travel bookings and accommodation online for the benefit of International and Indian tourists. � Benares is well connected by air with Delhi, Agra, Khajuraho, Lucknow and many other cities in India and abroad. Rail route and bus service connects Benares with major cities and states in India.
