Ecotourism is of special interest to UNEP for its relationship with conservation, sustainability, and biological diversity. As a development tool, ecotourism can advance the three basic goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity:

-conserve biological (and cultural) diversity, by strengthening protected area management systems (public or private) and increasing the value of sound ecosystems;

-promote the sustainable use of biodiversity, by generating income, jobs and business opportunities in ecotourism and related business networks, and

-share the benefits of ecotourism developments equitably with local communities and indigenous people, by obtaining their informed consent and full participation in planning and management of ecotourism businesses.

According to the Quebec Declaration on Ecotourism, ecotourism "embraces the principles of sustainable tourism... and the following principles which distinguish it from the wider concept of sustainable tourism:

Contributes actively to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage, Includes local and indigenous communities in its planning, development and operation, contributing to their well-being, Interprets the natural and cultural heritage of the destination to visitor, Lends itself better to independent travellers, as well as to organized tours for small size groups".

Therefore, any organization that purports to support ecotourism must include some, if not all the points below in their operation. It must be founded on environmental principles rooted in sustainable development which includes a responsible tourism policy and compliance with environmental legislation in their respective countries.

It must also strive to work with local businesses where possible for supplies and materials both in the supplying market and with our host communities

On communication, though still having some negative impact on environment should be the internet and other services using Voip technology. The internet especially becomes in handy in marketing purposes and communication with suppliers/customers to minimize unsustainable practices such as the use of ‘glossy’ brochures and postal communications. This will reduce the usage of forest and other gas emission by vehicles as they run to deriver the letter and other materials in business communication.

When visiting the host community try to minimize the number of participant and encourage home stay rather than mass tourism. This also minimizes any potential negative impacts on the environment. It also unsustainable to host a large group of visitors on community-based ecotours, local resources can become extremely constrained by large numbers of visitors.

Emphasize on being taken on your tour by the local people like guides, Service men, local representative where your tour is being organized by a foreign tour company, and translators who have an understanding of the culture and way of life of the host community. This will not only add benefit to guests since they can learn a lot about their host communities’ customs and rituals.

Always make sure that you understand the direct benefits the locals are getting from your visit. Any tour should:

Have the best practice referring to highest quality, excellence or superior practices in a particular field on tourism operator. Therefore best practice includes, among other things,

Protecting, conserving and investing in the environment
Minimizing & reducing wastes
Preventing pollution
Encouraging linkages with local communities
Responsible use of resources such as land, water, energy, culture etc Education to tourists
