If you want to go somewhere and really have the luxury experience but not be hounded by paparazzi then I have a perfect island escape. Wakaya is popular with movie stars and moguls and is on a private 2200 acre Fijian island owned by David Gilmore, founder of Fiji Water, a short 40 minute ride by private plan from the main land airport at Nadi.

There are only nine private thatched roof cottages that look straight out of a Ralph Lauren ad. Each romantic private cottage has a bar and living room, a large bedroom with vaulted ceilings, desk, curio and four posted king size bed (a real mattress and box springs, not what most island hotels try to pass off as a bed), and a porch. There is a large bathroom with two sinks, large tub and an outdoor but fully private lava rock shower. There is no phone in the room, just one in the lobby for emergencies, no TV, no news papers, no computers…..just quite native beauty.

The staff are all Fijian, very polite, respectful of your privacy and happy to share their culture. You could literally arrive with one change of clothes and last a week. When you arrive they give you a beautiful sarong and every time I left the room I returned to a completely restocked, refreshed room with yesterdays clothes laundered folded waiting on the bed.

You have the choice of taking your meals in your private hut call buras or going to the main dinning room where you can be sat privately or communally if things are just too quite for you. They have visiting guest chiefs from around the world. For an excursion I made arrangements to be taken to a private beach on the island. The staff packed a beautiful lobster and champagne lunch and took us to a deserted part of the island and put up road blocks to close the roads down to the beach. At the beach there where two large pristine hammocks stuffed full of plump pillows as if you turned the page to find another Ralph Lauren ad. There was a private bathroom that from the size I feared to be an outhouse but inside crisp white linen hand towels and not a spider web in site. As the sunset there was a huge cave of bats that flew high above our heads. There is both snorkeling and scuba diving available.

There is a glass hut in the coconut grove with modern gym. Wakaya offers a small nine hole golf course (not for serious golfers) and a spa that offers a 4 hand, and even a 10 hand massage along with several other services and amenities. There is a beautiful pool with a rock water - fountain. Wakaya is an all inclusive price except for the spa which is additional. There is no limit to the food and the bar is stock with all top brands. Even my day at the private beach was all included. When I say all inclusive, do not mistake it for budget. It is the perfect luxurious surroundings to decompress.
