Baseball is a tradition loved by old and young alike. New York City has two stadiums that are home to the NY Yankees and the NY Mets. Both Yankee and Shea Stadiums are great venues for watching a baseball game.
In 1921, the New York Yankees announced they were buying ten acres of land in the Bronx, the land that would become the new home for Yankee Stadium. The first game was played in the stadium in 1923, with more than 74,000 in attendance. The stadium was again remodeled after the completion of its 50th season. The stadium was almost completely torn down and modernized in every aspect. The new stadium opened April 15, 1976. Today, Yankee Stadium is one of the most modern baseball facilities in the country. It also home to many other events, including football, boxing, soccer, and religious conventions, in the off-season.
To take in a game, tickets can cost you anywhere from $12 to $300. Ticket prices will go up if they are purchased the day of the game, but most decent seating sections are sold out by this time anyway. To get a decent seat to watch the game, you can expect to spend about fifty or sixty dollars. They also have handicap accessible seating.
If taking in a whole game isn't your idea of fun, but you would still like to visit the stadium, consider a stadium tour. There are three different tours you can take, ranging from quick and simple to long and elaborate, the Classic Tour, the Champions' Tour, and the Champions' Plus Tour. The Classic Tour, $15 for adults and $8 for kids, will take you on a one hour tour around the dugout, press box, and club house. This tour is available only for individuals and there are a limited number of tickets. The Champions Tour, $20 for adults and $15 for kids, takes you to all the locations of the Classic Tour, but also shows you a historical film of Yankee history from the Adidas Suite. The Champions Tour can be booked for groups 12-50. The final tour, The Champions Plus Tour, includes every aspect of the previous two tours but also includes a stop at The Great Moments Room and the Yankee Club. Tourists are also given a promotional souvenir at the end of the tour. Adult tickets for the Champions Plus Tour are $25 and kids are $18.
If you aren't a Yankees fan, New York City is also home to Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets. This stadium has hosted Mets games since 1964, but has also hosted Pope John Paul II in 1979 and three Beatles concerts. Tickets to Shea Stadium are going to be less expensive, and they still offer many ranges of ticket prices as well as handicap seating.
Whether your taking a historic tour or just enjoying the activity of the ballpark on a summer day, Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium can be excellent stops on your New York City tour.
