The Ancient History Of Sri Lanka   by Paul Abbey

Sri Lanka which was originally known as Ceylon is a small island and is around 31km from the Southern Coast of India. This particular island sometimes referred to as the "Pearl of The Indian Ocean" is officially known as "The Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka" and has a population of around 20 million.

The name Sri Lanka is actually derived from a Sanskrit word which when translated into English means "Resplendent Land". Certainly this name really matches up to the island and what it has to offer to those who live or visit it.

For many years because of its location in the Indian Ocean and is considered to be a major as well as strategic naval point between both West and South East Asia. This is simply because the island happens to be located on all the major sea routes in this location.

For centuries now Buddhism has been the main religion for those living on the island but over recent years there have been changes. Because the population is now becoming somewhat diverse only around a ¼ of the population now follow Buddhism whilst the rest follow religions such as Christianity. Islam and Hinduism.

But as well as different religions now to be found on this very exotic and beautiful island the population is made up of a number of different communities. The largest community on the island today is that made of Sinhalese whilst there are also Tamils who are mainly living in the North and East parts of the island.

As previously mentioned the island is very beautiful with its beaches and tropical forests so has become one of the most popular vacation destinations that people are now choosing. But along with tourism being a strong factor as to why this country has such a good economy it is also well known for is production of some of the most important things we use in Western society today. This country not only produces beautiful tea and coffee but also it is renowned for its production of rubber.

When it comes to visiting Sri Lanka the best time to arrange a vacation there would be during the months from December until March. It is best that if you do wish to vacation in Sri Lanka during these times you look at resorts on the West or South coasts of the island or up in the hill country. However be warned that during this period the island is likely to be full of tourists from Europe who are trying to escape the cold winter weather. So it may be worth your while to consider visiting this beautiful and exotic island out of season. Not only will the beaches and other tourist attractions be less crowded but the costs of flights and hotel accommodation will often be cheaper as well.
