Recently the work of Cyprus taxi drivers has given rise to complaints. The guests of the island express complain due to the rude attitude towards them on behalf of taxi divers. This problem drew attention of the Transport and Tourism Departments, and as a beginning stage the special seminar for taxi drivers was organized.

For the present, its frequenting is voluntary but probably if the situation does not change the authorities of Cyprus will apply more strict measures.

Even two years ago the Cyprus police promised to look after the taxi drivers who significantly increase the fees. As it was informed the policemen in civilian clothes should patrol the streets and control that the taxi drivers start the counters and do not cheat the tourists. If the taxi driver is caught red-handed he is to pay the penalty of 100 pounds.

In 2006 the Cyprus authorities made a decision to develop unique charges and standards of behaviour that the taxi drivers should comply with. The same period of time the Cyprus Tourist Organization issued a special brochure for those who intend to use the services of local taxi drivers.

CTO obliges all taxi drivers to use counters and, at passenger's request, to provide receipt where the trip date, the auto registration number and driver's surname should be indicated. The usage of air-conditioner in taxi should also be free of charge.

The Road Department by the Ministry of Transport had created a group of specialists, which would control the quality of services rendered by the taxi drivers and also consider passengers' claims. You may apply claims by phone from Monday till Friday. In the days-off you can contact the nearest police station or call on hot line.

Besides, last year CTO published a special brochure for drivers "10 precepts of a taxi driver". The taxi drivers were asked to maintain the car clean, to follow the road laws, to use the principles of safe driving, to have decent external appearance, to treat the passengers with politeness and respect, not to smoke in the car, not to ask vulgar questions to passengers, to express readiness to help the invalid persons even when they were not asked for assistance, and to be proud of being taxi drivers.
