Being always different the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado is a popular place of visiting for tourists. The Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado boasts the tallest dunes in North America.

"The dune field itself is about 30 square miles, but there is about 300 square miles of sand area around that," said park ranger Patrick Myers.

This huge dune massive, lying at the foot of Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Central-South part of Colorado, is moving and taking bizarre forms constantly. Sometimes sand dunes reach 210 metres high.

"There is no place on Earth like that. The dunes need our special Elian circulation of wind and water, turning their direction and changing them perpetually," said Charles Bedford of Nature Conservancy. "There isn't a day that you can come to this place when it is the same as the day before".

Besides the fairy altering landscape, another thing that draws visitors to the dunes is the local friendly nature. "Even though the dunes are a designated wilderness area, it is a place where you can build sand castles, slide on the sand on a snowboard, or even on skis," Myers added. "Buffaloes and elks, antelopes and deers are common to this valley. It is a rich and productive valley; it always has water for local animals. For example, 2uffaloes have been here for hundreds of thousands of years."

The combination of sand, active sport and animals has made the sand dunes a perfect family destination. The amount of tourists having visited this place in 2007 has become 8% higher as compared to 2006. The record number of visitors was fixed there in June - it is 20% higher than in June of previous years.

"For many people it has become a landmark in their lives," Myers said. It is a place where parents have brought them when they were little, and they continue to come back and bring their children. It is a place where the winds have gathered the sand, and it seems to have gathered the people here too."
