Portland is the largest city in Oregon. As of 2005, its population was estimated as 556,370, and a further 2 million or so people lived in the surrounding metropolitan area.

- Professional sports teams in Portland include the NBA basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers, the Pacific Coast League baseball team, the Portland Beavers, and the USL-1 soccer team, Portland Timbers.

- One of Portland's nicknames is the "City of Roses", because roses are extensively cultivated in the city.

- Mount Hood, a potentially active volcano, can be seen from much of the city. Additionally, Mount Saint Helens, an active volcano, can be seen in the distance from Portland's higher buildings.

- Former US President George H. W. Bush is said to have referred to Portland as "Little Beirut" in reference to the protests which were held in the city during his visits.
