The Hawaiian climate is exactly like that of any tropical area. The constant trade winds ensure less humidity though. During summers the temperature may go up to 31°C and during winters to 18°C. Strangely, even snow falls here at the higher altitudinal areas like the Maui's Haleakala. The climate differs from island to island. The Northeast Trade Winds slap against the windward side and thus a lot of rain falls around here. The leeward side, quite obviously does not get as much rain and it also receives more sunlight. It is because of this difference that most of the resorts and hotels are built on the sunny, dry leeward side. All the islands of Hawaii have been hit at least once by a hurricane. But it is still considered a rare occurrence here. The most famous and perhaps the most devastating hurricane to hit the Hawaii islands was the Iniki hurricane. It hit the island in 1992. Most of the year, Hawaii is blessed to have very good weather. This is what makes it such a popular tourist destination and so famous all over the world. With the shifting of the Royal family of Hawaii to Maui and then to O'ahu, the people shifted too. Honolulu, the now famous city and harbor was once the capital city when the King was king Kamehameha. Before Honolulu, the capital of the state was Lahaina at Maui. If you ever go to Hawaii, you must visit the reef. It was announced a National Monument by President George W Bush in 2006. The area covered by the monument is around 370,000 square kilometres. It is home to reefs and shallow as also deep sea in to the great Pacific Ocean. In terms of area it is bigger and larger than any American National Park.
