Our Australian-vacation fantasies always begin with a view over Sydney Harbour, glass of Shiraz in hand. Food & Wine brings that dream to real-life with four recommendations for local wine spots, courtesy of Sydney celebrity chef Neil Perry.
Bambini Wine Room & Bar
Perry favors the oysters and salt-cod brandade. The wine list has a strong Australian selection and a variety of international wines, featuring producers such as Pieropan and Ramonet. 185 Elizabeth St., Sydney; 011-61-2-9283-7098.
Bodega
For tapas that Perry calls “rock and roll-good,” plus Spanish and South American wines. 216 Commonwealth St., Surry Hills; 011-61-2-9212-7766.
Fish Face Restaurant and Sushi Bar
“Gotta love the fish-and-chips with a glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc,” Perry says. 132 Darlinghurst Rd., Darlinghurst; 011-61-2-9332-4803.
Rockpool
Perry’s own Asian-Med menu is heavy on seafood; the extensive wine list has an impressive selection of older vintages, plus three house wines by Jeffrey Grosset: Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet. A renovation due to finish [...]

IgoUgo member and editor Valerita has one regret about her first trip to Brazil: that she didn’t spend more days in Rio de Janeiro. Here’s why.
My biggest concern when considering a trip to Rio was safety. When I asked midtownmjd-a recent visitor to the city-about it, she said, “I felt safe in Rio all the time!” That was all I needed to know, and our initial plans to spend 9 days in the quiet town of Buzios turned into a 6-day stay in Buzios and a 3-day stay in the city of contrasts: Rio de Janeiro.
Visiting the city in times of dengue epidemic is not the best idea, or at least, that’s what we thought before going. We had to use repellent all the time, although I didn’t see a mosquito during our entire stay. Once there-and calling home every day to say “We are perfectly fine”-we let the city [...]

It seems that sumo-and not just the sumo wrestler-is huge these days. And there’s no need to cross an ocean for an authentic encounter: the Grand Sumo Tournament is headed to Los Angeles on Saturday, June 7, and we have tickets to give away.
The kind folks at discoverLosAngeles.com have given us tickets to dole out to the first IgoUgo Travel Blog readers who email us. There’s no catch; as long as you are 21 years of age or older and complete our release form, you can win two free tickets.
Of course, filling out a form is nothing compared to the great lengths some IgoUgo members have taken to see sumo in action. An already-hooked retirejapan found himself in Tokyo during a season devoid of tournaments, so he headed to a sumo-beya, or sumo stable, in Ryogoku to watch sumo wrestlers train (”call ahead and receive permission,” he advises). IgoUgo’s own [...]

Contrary to popular belief, IgoUgo travelers don’t always have their noses in guidebooks. Sometimes they read other things, and many of them love literature enough to let their favorite authors dictate their destinations and trip activities. Here are three beloved literary circuits in the US; if they were books, they’d be highlighted and dog-eared.
Northeast US: Cooperstown to Philadelphia
“Cooperstown-named for James Fenimore Cooper. It was just a little fact that escaped a couple of 40-something English teachers. We were going there for the Baseball Hall of Fame and discovered a lesson plan. Literature + Baseball = Field of Dreams.” So began thewanderingpoet518’s visit to Cooperstown, New York; though he arrived on a sports pilgrimage, he embraced the town’s literary legacy with open arms. Cheryl likewise paid respect to The Last of the Mohicans author Cooper in his hometown, noting that “there is lots more to Cooperstown than just baseball.” More than [...]

The red carpet meets the sea in Cannes this month, but the town has a lot to offer besides movie screens. Here’s your quintessential Cannes checklist, providing plenty of ways to fill your days until the sun goes down and the stars come out.
Attend a movie premiere
Even if you don’t think you’ll ever get into one of the festival’s much-hyped movies-try. Many an IgoUgo member has managed to triumph over seemingly strict security. Go Girl! “saw 3-4 films a day, partied all night, and only slept when [she] had to.” Nice, France, timeshare owner bakonwheel crashed the festival after his friend “took a business trip to Los Angeles two weeks before our trip to France, met an executive from Sony Films during a meeting, and mentioned his trip to France during Cannes Festival week. The executive gave him a contact in Cannes, and we ended up getting tickets to a [...]

Most of us have fallen victim to a travel mooch: those out-of-town guests whose visits turn into waking nightmares. But when we asked travelers to tell their ultimate mooching horror stories, we got more than we’d bargained for. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
The Idle Imposter
“I was 22 and had just moved to San Diego. My dad told me that a young guy who works for him might come out, and would I mind if he stayed with me for a week or so? I said no, but a week later, Vince arrived. He arrived with little money, and soon, my food and beer disappeared. I restocked everything once, and when it disappeared again, I didn’t need to learn any more lessons. When he got too much sun and started to peel, Vince left his dead skin on my table in the living room. And he was extremely messy: his clothes [...]

Whether the travelers are father and son, brothers, or a few buddies, guys’ trips constitute more than just a small travel niche. They’re not all bachelor parties, baseball games, and beer, either. Well, maybe a lot of them are, but sometimes a guy just needs a trip with the boys to enjoy things like fishing and cheesesteaks. We hate to adhere to stereotypes, but we couldn’t seem to dig up too many bachelor-party journals that involved spa treatments and wine-tastings. Here, we spotlight IgoUgo members’ alpha-male trips.
The Father-Son Trip
Seaotter71 buddied up with his dad for a Father/Son Trip to China. While son lives in California, father is “full-blooded Chinese, but born and raised in Panama. As a young man, tradition dictated he visit China, but the political climate at the time made it impossible.” Though hiking the Great Wall proved tiring for dad, what better way for the two men [...]
