News Footage: Car Fatally Drops 30ft into Swamp

In Bellevue, Washington on the Saturday morning of February 24, 2007 (called in at 10:31 AM), a passing Metro Bus Supervisor called 911 after seeing a vehicle upside-down in Mercer Slough near the eastbound off-ramp from Bellevue Way to I-90 and I-405 (very close to Lake Washington). The Washington State Patrol, Bellevue Fire, and neighboring Mercer Island Fire responded. The car's top was totally submerged under water, so divers were called in. A young male from Kent was found and pronounced dead at the scene. He would later be identified as 18 year old Mathew Durnwirth. State Patrol says he lost control, bouncing off both sides of the guardrails, before his car flipped and dropped 50 ft to the muddy water below. The King County Medical Examiner was dispatched to investigate further how he died. Two different ramps were closed down during this process. On the night before (on Friday), a man called 911 around 10:42 PM reporting that he thought he saw a car going a high rate of speed loose control around the same area. A State Patrol was dispatched to the area, but did not find anything. Now, State Patrol is saying that the incidences are related. When the red Honda Civic was pulled out of the water, investigators found an empty vodka bottle, along with multiple empty beer cans. Because of this information, the Washington State Patrol thinks that speed and alcohol led to this accident.
