Snow closes down Bucharest airports
The last plane to take off Bucharest's Aurel Vlaicu airport was Thursday morning at 5.30. After that, no plane could take off or land because of bad weather. Five flights have already been canceled.
Stefan Mladin, Baneasa Airport manager:
We closed down the runway, it's a normal procedure.
When will the airport be open again?
It very much depends on the weather. Snow has been falling massively, the wind is strong and this makes snow-clearing activity more difficult.
The Henri Coanda Airport was also closed down at 10.30 am, for the runways to be cleared. Airport officials estimate the snow-clearing operations will last at least 4 hours and flights are to be resumed after 2.30 pm.
Valentin Iordache, Otopeni Airport manager:
We hope to reopen the airport again in 4 hours and allow flights to take off and land, but it all depends on the weather.
The Romanian Tarom Airlines have announced that 4 international flights and 2 internal flights, to Antalya, Vienna, Cluj and Timisoara have been annulled. Passengers have been directed to other flights. The Craiova Airport has also been closed down, while flights landing on Constanta's Mihail Kogalniceanu Airport were delayed.
