Monterey Bay Life 4 (Baby Otter, Spanish Dancer)

While scuba diving across from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I found this mating pair of Spanish Dancers (Dendronotus iris). These are a kind of nudibranch that can swim in the open water when required. Dendronotis iris feed on the arms of tube worms on the sandy bottom. However, this does not kill the tube worm. After mating the eggs of the Spanish Dancer are laid into the tube worm. This way the young will have food as soon as they are born. This selection also includes pictures of a southern sea otter pup and it's mother. This beautiful baby otter was born the second week of August 2007 at the Breakwater Cove and Marina, in Monterey, California. Watching this little guy has been a treat. There are far fewer opportunities to photograph these two lately as 'otter school' is in full effect.
