New Prison Built for Euro 2008

Kean Wong: The upcoming Euro 2008 Tour for football will soon descend upon seven host cities in Europe. And so a special prison to house violent fans from matches is being renovated. A judge will also be able to sentence any hooligans on site, meaning all football issues can be kept separate from the City's court. It once housed 19th century prisoners and now football fans are being warned they could end up here if they cause trouble during Euro 2008. The Swiss city of Basel is stepping up security ahead of the football tournament. And Basel's public prosecutor says police have decided to reopen the ancient prison. [Markus Melzl, Spokesman]: "If violence does occur, then we can detain 350 to 400 people here, at the most 450. If the numbers exceed the capacity then of course we'll have to look to other places which we have available. But we expect that it will be enough for the first phase and we hope of course that it will be sufficient overall." The "Schaellemaettelli" prison in the heart of Basel was closed after its cells fell into disrepair. It's since been used as a theatre and a film set. Basel had to spend around three hundred thousand euros making the prison fit for purpose during Euro 2008. It's scenes like this the Swiss and Austrian authorities hope to prevent taking place. During the 2006 World Cup in Germany, hundreds of Germany and Poland fans were arrested when they clashed after a match. Whether the prison needs to be used or not, the Euro 2008 final will also bring the final whistle for "Schaellemaettelli". A few days after the end of the tournament, the authorities will start demolishing the prison to make way for a new university complex.
