Otter Mound Marco Island Florida
Otter Mound on Marco Island Florida built by the Calusa Indians before the Spaniards arrived in Florida 500 years ago. Surrounded by multi-million dollar homes. Part of the old Caxambas part of Marco Island. The Calusa were here when the Spanish arrived in Florida 500 years ago. In the 1960s, building started to boom on Marco Island making it a resort for the rich and famous.
In 1895 Archaeologist Hamilton Cushing excavated Calusa cultural objects as some of the most spectacular Native American remains in the southeast, with ornate carved and painted wooded masks, as complex as those made by the Indians in the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately the former spectacular Indians mounds on Marco Island have been mostly destroyed or built upon.
This is my first attempt at a small video from my new Sony camera, so sorry for the shaky view. I am still learning.
